gPodder 4.6.0 "Industrial" released

A new version of gPodder 4 is out for Android, CLI and Sailfish OS. The Blackberry version didn't make it for this release (yet), due to some Qt 5 layout issues on Blackberry 10 that I haven't yet looked into.

Among the usual UI improvements, this release changes the previously JSON-based database for a SQLite3-based database on top of minidb. Migration from the old database to the new database is automatic the first time you use the new version. As always with changes like this, it could be that the migration doesn't work for some reason - in this case, let us know in the issues tracker.

Packages for Sailfish OS are available on the downloads page and the package for Android has been uploaded to Google Play.

gPodder 4.4.0 "Mundartrap" released

A new version of gPodder 4 is out for Android, Blackberry Playbook, Blackberry 10, CLI and Sailfish OS.

This release includes an all-new Android-specific UI (only used on Android), better integration for Android (pause when headphones are unplugged, back button support) as well as a sleep timer and play queue.

Packages for Sailfish OS are available on the downloads page, packages for Blackberry Playbook and Blackberry 10 have been uploaded to App World and are waiting in QA, and the package for Android has been uploaded to Google Play.

gPodder 4 coming to Android

Yesterday, I've ported gPodder 4 to Android. This uses Qt 5 and Python 3, as well as the latest development version of PyOtherSide. Since then, I've also fixed some bugs related to font rendering. This means that gPodder 4 will be available in Google Play in a few hours. This is an early port, and gPodder 4's UI is still missing some features and platform integration, but the basic functionality works. What is known to not work (and what I'd like to see fixed in future versions):

• Notifications / playback integration (so you can pause/skip from your lock screen)
• Headphone disconnect notification (so gPodder pauses playback on disconnect)
• Back button integration (so hitting the back button navigates between pages inside the app)
• Text input fixes (depending on input method, this is a bit spotty at the moment)
• Activities / URL schemes / intent integration (open gpodder:// URLs, feeds, etc...)
• Opening of video files with external applications (like on other gPodder 4 platforms)

Android Client "Detlef Gpodderson" 1.0 released

(This blog post comes from the Detlef team, who just finished their one-semester project at University to create a gpodder.net client for Android.)

After almost 800 hours of work, attending hackdays, thousands of lines written (and thousand of lines deleted again) it's finally done: Version 1.0 of Detlef Gpodderson has been released on Google Play.

Excuse me, but who is Detlef?
Detlef is the code name of a gpodder.net client for Android 4+ devices. It was created by a team of 6 students during a university course on software engineering tutored by Stefan (@horrendus) and released under the terms of the GNU GPLv2 license.

800 hours of work may sound like a lot for such an app - but the course focused in large parts on project management, organisation and documentation. So the 800 hours did not go exclusively in coding as one might think.

The resulting software forms a good basis for further development, and contributions are very welcome!

Sounds nice, but what can I do with it?
Detlef Gpodderson is designed as a dedicated client for gpodder.net for devices running Android 4.0 or newer. Here's what you can do with this first release:

• Synchronize podcast subscriptions (two-way)
• Discover new podcasts from within the app
• Listen to podcasts using the integrated media player
• Create playlists, filter episodes lists and much more

You want to contribute? Great!
Everybody can contribute to Detlef, and you don't even need to be able to write code to help us! Here are some ideas what you can do to help us out:

• Report bugs and suggestions for improvement
• Rate and review the app in Google Play
• Send a pull request with your code contributions
• Translate the app into your language
• Spread the word - write a blog post, tweet about it :)

All that’s left to say is: Have fun with Detlef, and send us some feedback! If something does not work in this first version, please file a bug or even send a pull request - we are sure that we can iteratively improve the application to a point where it's the best podcatcher on Android.
